From Ed's wife Linda and their children:
Edmund John Cahill was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. His parents were Esther and Ed Cahill and he had two brothers Jim (resides in Cimerron, NM) and Dan (resides in Bennett, CO).
Ed attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School where he became interested in Boy Scouts. He grew to love the outdoors and continued his scouting into highschool attaining the level of Eagle Scout. He attended Regis High School but preferred his friends and his '59 Red Ford Convertible over studying. In fact, he liked his friends and car so much that his parents prayed him through his Senior Year. Ed went to Regis College for one year and then enlisted in the US Navy. He spent his first year in SanDiego attending electronics schools where he excelled. After a year in San Diego, CA he was excited about his assignment to Kodiak Island, Alaska where his love of the outdoors and hunting would be a dream come true. While there, he was a Boy Scout Leader, enjoyed salmon fishing, elk hunting and filled up on King Crab and halibut. While stationed at the Naval Air Station on Kodiak Island, Ed was responsible for the installation and maintenance of a variety of communication, navigation and surveillance electronic equipment. He was on Kodiak, Island during the 'Cuban Crisis' and finished his tour of duty there one month before the 'big quake' of '64. Ed returned to San Diego for his last year of service and was stationed on the Submarine Tender 'USS Sperry'.
Ed met his wife Linda through her cousin and our classmate Jim Tobin. Linda believes that she first met Ed when she was twelve - while he was still involved with Boy Scouts at Blessed Sacrament grade school. They were married in 1963 in Omaha and have three children and ten grandchildren.
After Ed's naval service, he was hired by IBM and moved his family to Denver where he began what was to become a very exciting and rewarding career. Ed worked for IBM from 1965 until he retired in 1991. He worked in Denver for a year while the Boulder Plant was being built. By 1970, he had reached a position in the company that necessitated a move from Colorado to the IBM office in Pittsburgh, PA. Ed came to the Omaha office in 1974, Linda's hometown, to put down some roots for their children. After retiring from IBM, he worked for First Data Corporation until 2000. With his position at FDC, he became quite the world traveler with many trips to England and Mexico. He always enjoyed the many friendships he developed through his work and travels. Ed left FDC in 2000 because of failing health and from 2000 to 2002, he and Linda spent part of their time in Denver so that he could spend time with his brothers.
In his early years, Ed was the family and friend TV repairman. He was also known as the "family/friend" car repair man doing many tune-ups until the age of the computerized engine. He was known for his well-done charcoal burgers and the red and gray in his beard. He loved to go to I-80 and Eagle Raceway for the car races (Sprint Cars) and worked on his friend's 'pit crew' with his son Jeff. Sprint cars were his favorite especially when "The Outlaws" were running.
All of his children and grandchildren live in Omaha so Ed was able to see and enjoy them often. He also liked to take vacations with his family going to the family condo in George Town, CO or fishing in MN. When in Minnesota, he had his own picnic table where he was kept busy untangling lines and baiting hooks - (out of 11 grandkids, 9 are boys). Ed loved it when Nebraska played Colorado in football. He would attend the family football parties (in Omaha) decked out in a NE shirt and then uncover to reveal his Colorado gear and really cheered his team on.
Ed enjoyed e-mailing his family and friends. Everyone could count on him to send something on the latest political situation, a humorous story or a religious prayer. Ed passed away in 2004.
